Day 6: No Time, No Worries...Short Series to Save the Day

Tedwin

Don't you hate it when you come home from busy day without a lot of time on your hand...especially when you want to read manga or watch anime to relax. Often time...some series are way too long...or just releases too slow...you just want something simple and that can finished quickly and be satisfying. I'm going to cover short completed anime series for you guys here. I'm going to tackle different genres to change things up. Keep it fresh and exciting!!! Enjoy

Detroit Metal City, 12 mins,12 episodes. It is super short but super awesome. It is one of the funniest anime ever....I mean EVER. Heavy death metal + misunderstood situations = numerous comedic events. The heavy metal music isn't that bad too, I find it quite catchy. RAPE RAPE RAPE....!!!!

Krauser: It was an accident, I promised....not >:D
~Led by phallus-waiving terrorist-from-hell Johannes Krauser II (guitar/vocals,) and given pulsing, throbbing life by indestructible drummer Camus and bassist Alexander Jagi, Detroit Metal City is the hottest ticket on the concert circuit! There's just one catch. That "hottest ticket" is just a meal ticket, and beneath the makeup, these ultimate head-bangers are hired doppelgangers who don't even LIKE what they do! Jaggi is actually Wada, who wants to play glam rock; Camus is Nishida, an anime fan with an appalling weakness for curry and NSFW videos; and Krauser is... oh the shame... street-singing Soichi Negishi, whose dreams of singing happy pop hits seem hopelessly doomed by the success of his rage-fueled alter ego! Worse, he can't even tell anyone who Krauser is. Not even the girl he likes, who HATES DMC! Will rage against the corporate machine consume Negishi's tortured soul? Is there life after death metal? What it's like to put your head in a jet engine and turn up the volume?~ (Source: Sentai Filmworks)

Fooly Cooly, 25 mins, 6 episodes. It is one wacky anime, awesome directing and has plenty of style...simply ahead of its time. Prepare to journey together in this series with the male protagonist as he go through his "coming of age" phase of his life. Fantastic anime but can get a little confusing so pay good attention and I recommend Google. Its your best friend. The original soundtrack by The Pillows are simply the best. You will fall in love with the music too.
Canti: The most powerful pimple robot grown from the head of a prepubescent boy

~Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical), but when his older brother leaves for America to play baseball, his brother leaves his homeless 17 year old girlfriend Mamimi behind. Mamimi is sending mixed signals and advances to Naota, and he doesn't know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota's world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her bass guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. She calls herself "Haruko" and her presence changes Naota's life to even further insanity.~ (Source: AnimeNewsNetwork)

Baccano! 24 mins, 13 episode. Has a big cast full of memorable characters. Complex plot but makes it one of the best story telling anime ever with it back and forth sequence of events. You can call this a best mixed anime because it has numerous appeals from genres.
Isaac and Miria: The adorable and quirky duo idiots, you will love them.

~During the early 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.

Based on the award winning light novels of the same name, this anime adaptation follows several events that initially seem unrelated, both in time and place, but are part of a much bigger story—one of alchemy, survival and immortality. Merging these events together are the kindhearted would-be thieves, Isaac and Miria, connecting various people, all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas, and creating lifelong bonds and consequences for everyone involved.~

Another, 24 mins, 12 episodes. This is better than all the crappy horror movies that USA releases. It is not scary per se but it is creepy as hell. You don't know how many times your hair on your body will stand up. Mystery, Horror, and Supernatural at its finest. The music builds the thrills and gore just adds to the overall feel to this horrific anime. It will start out slow but it is definitely worth the buildup.

Sakakibara Kouichi: Trust me, that blood isn't mine D:

~When Kouichi Sakakibara transfers to his new school, he can sense something frightening in the atmosphere of his new class, a secret none of them will talk about. At the center is the beautiful girl Mei Misaki. Kouichi is immediately drawn to her mysterious aura, but then he begins to realize that no one else in the class is aware of her presence~

Afro Samurai, 27 mins, 5 episodes. Simple story, a lot of fighting....samurai swords....blood and gore. Just badassery is one way to put this anime. Not much is said of the main protagonist except he is one cool ass mofo. One anime to get the blood pumping fast. Choreography and the animated fight scenes are still one of best compare to current airing anime as of this post.

Afro: Voiced by Samuel L. Jackson himself. But other than that, look at that fast-paced action!

~After watching his father die in a duel against an unbeatable villain known only as "Justice," young Afro fixes his life on the study of swords and revenge. The tale of Afro Samurai is one of bloody hardship and pain. Along his solitary path of revenge for his murdered father, he sheds no tears & knows no love. Forever chased by powerful enemies in a lawless technology-speckled dystopia, he evades bullets and blade to reach his final prey: a man who will not die. But Afro will reach his quarry—even if it means painting a road of blood and brains from here to the bitter inevitable end.~

T-Na

Alright, time for some short manga recommendations! I tried to find manga that are 15 volumes or less. Here are some of my favorites.

Koe no Kitachi - 62 chapters, 7 volumes. Written & illustrated by Yoshitoki Oima, this was originally a one-shot in the Feb 2011 Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, but due to it's overwhelming popularity it was serialized in 2013. Truly a great slice of life story; it explores the issue of bullying in Japan, friendship, guilt, and redemption. Every character felt real and you'll end up loving all of them despite their flaws.

The story revolves around Shoko Nishimiya, an elementary school student who has impaired hearing. She transfers into a new school, where she is bullied by her classmates. One of them is Houya Ishida, who took it too far and Shoko end up transferring to a new school. Afterwards, Houya is ostracized and bullied by his class, with no friends to speak to and no plans for the future. Years later, he meet Shoko again by chance. This is his story about redemption.

Lucifer and The Biscuit Hammer - 65 chapters, 10 volumes. Story and art by Satoshi Mizukami. This one is my all time favorite. It may look and sound like nothing special but it is packed with twists, humor, action, romance, drama, psychological goodness. There are no major plot holes or contradictions; the story is very consistent from beginning to end -- something you don't see that often in manga or anime. Every single characters are unique and interesting. Believe me, I had my doubts when I first picked this up 7 years ago, but I'm so glad I read it! A real gem.
The world is in mortal peril! The end draws near when Earth will be destroy by a giant hammer. Sir Noi Crezant, the Lizard Knight is sent to find the great warrior Amamiya Yuuhi, in hopes of locating Princess Samidare and the remaining knights to defeat the "Biscuit Hammer." Unfortunately for him, Yuuhi wants no part of it, and the Princess seem to have a different plan in mind.

Bambino! - 164 chapters, 14 volumes. Despite the unattractive artwork, this is one of the best culinary manga that I've came across. Written and illustrated by Tetsuji Sekiya, Bambino! is a Seinen manga about following one's dream and the struggles in pursing that dream. The main character undergo a tremendous growth throughout his journey. The art style is very unique in creating a dramatic atmosphere. On top of that, the author is very knowledgeable with culinary terms and techniques. You will sure enjoy the rich dialogues and descriptions of the food. Might want to have something to munch on while you read this.
"Shogo Ban, a college student from Fukuoka, likes to cook. Thanks to the owner of the restaurant where he works part-time, he finds himself working at the line of Roppongi's best Italian restaurant, Trattoria Baccanale, and discovers that the real deal isn't quite as easy as he'd thought. The manga follows Ban as he struggle to keep up with the hectic workload and his co-workes, along with relationship issues with his girlfriend Eri, who he left back in Fukuoka."  -- MU

Bio-Meat: Nectar - 105 chapters, 12 volumes. Written and illustrated by Yuki Fujisawa. To sum it up in one word? Epic. This manga is definitely not for the weak-hearted! It's a mix of sci-fi, horror, psychological, drama, gore (lots of gore) and action that will have your eyes glued to the pages until the very end. The art is from the early 2000's but it's not realistic like Bambino! since this is considered a shounen manga. If you have not read anything like this, then you need to give some time to get use to it. You either hate or love the characters -- it's a shounen manga so don't expect too much on characterisation since the author have to appeal to the shounen's audience. Regardless, I do like the main group of characters and it's fun watching them grow up.

Man is having a hard time finding food and getting rid of their trash, so science comes up with a bio-engineered animal to solve the problem. The animal, BMs, can self-replicate and survives by eating everything from plastic to metal. They eat away human's unwanted trash and in return, are killed to feed humanity. You can guess what may happen if this self-replicating, endlessly hungry, killing machine got loose in Tokyo. -- MangaHere

Yami no Koe - 7 chapters, 1 volume. A collection of Junji Ito's works. I guess this is the shortest read in this list but if you are a horror-lover like me, then this is a real treat. Junji Ito is one of the best horror mangaka of all time. All his stories are eerie and very grostesqu. Instead of the typical evil spirits, his works explores the evil and nasty side of human's nature. The art work is old but creepy and I find all his works very fascinating. If you want a good scare then read this in the dark with creepy music in the background ;]

A copilation of Junji Ito's works; contains 7 short stories. Story 1 "Blood-surpling Darkness" - A girl, after being dumped by her boyfriend, decides to loose weight to get him back. She end up becoming anorexic, and meets a boy who supposedly will not eat either until she does. But how can he lost weight so fast just after introducing himself? --MangHere
